Book Giveaway to Celebrate Sandy's Podcastaversary!

I've been listening to podcasts for so long now, I don't even remember how or why I got started with them. I started out listening to several Mom-oriented podcasts (Manic Mommies, Mommy Files, The Motherhood Trap, etc..) then broadened my listening to my hobbies of quilting and knitting. One of the first quilt podcasts I ever listened to was Quilting for the Rest of Us. Sandy's voice is so warm and friendly, you truly feel like you're listening to a friend talk about quilting with you. I remember being up at 3 am for another feeding, and even before I had the baby latch on, I had to make sure my earphones were in (they make that "R" and "L" way too small) and a podcast was queued up. Many times it was Sandy who gave me new insight into a topic I'd heard before.

She's celebrating 2 years on the air, and I couldn't be happier for her. As someone who also podcasts around a busy life, I know the time and dedication it takes to putting in just one or two episodes a month. Sandy has pretty consistently given us 4 episodes every month these last 2 years, and I couldn't be more grateful.

Sandy is having a huge week of giveaways, using her blog as the jump-off point. You've either landed here from there, or you need to head over there to check out everyone having some fun and giving stuff away.

For my giveaway I have a copy of a book that just went on sale:

Sunday Morning Quilts by Amanda Jean Nyberg and Cheryl Arkison.

PLUS!!

To sweeten the giveaway with some fabric-y goodness, I have a charm pack of
Aneela Hoey's adorable A Walk in the Woods line.

How to enter to win both the book and charm pack:

Past Quilt #6: A Happy Bride

I got married on May 21st, 2004. I still remember almost every minute of that day, like it was yesterday. I don't think I'd ever felt so happy inside. I was also so confident I was doing the right thing marrying the man I chose, I didn't feel nervous at all. OK, maybe a little nervous. I did have on about 25 pounds of wedding gown to get down the aisle with 2 layers of Spanx and 3 inch heels. But nervous about the man I was walking to? Not a bit.

Several months after the "big day" I wanted to make a small art quilt to remind me of that wonderful day, and since the photographer took hundreds of photos, I had a lot to choose from. I decided to use this one:

Cropped out the excess to get it here:

Using Tammie Bowser's Quilted Photography book and software, I was able to create a highly pixilated image of the picture. Then using over 15 different values of fabric, I made this mosaic art quilt:

A close-up:

I purposely used variegated thread in a meandering stipple and didn't worry about lighter threads being on the darker fabric. This gives the portrait more natural shading that the naked eye picks up when you're standing at a natural distance from the quilt..something else I learned in another art quilt class with Noriko Endo.

CGM Podcast Episode 27: Spring Has Sprung

Listen to the episode HERE

Show Notes
  • Life Update: Sam is learning to ride her bike without a helpful "push" from Mom, Maddy is still indignant she can't have everything she wants when she wants it, and I am happy to putter in my garden, prepping it for the season.
  • WIPs: binding At Home in the Woods - too depressing to go on for too long about. Wrangling 3 strands of yarn for my slippers, and ignoring the creative "input" from my brother for their baby quilt has been all that I'm working on lately.
  • Interesting thing I've been reading about: "Servant in the house" aka the sewing machine.
    • Book found at a local used bookstore: Queen of Inventions by Laurie Carlson
    • Another good reference site: Servant in the House: A Brief History of the Sewing Machine posted by The Smithsonian Library

Thanks for listening!

    What I'm Reading This Month

Back to some more literary reads this month! I have had all of these in my nightstand or eBook pile for awhile now.

This author is a Pulitzer Prize winner, and the book has
received so much good press and reviews, I hope I'm not
    setting myself up for disappointment.

Summer at Tiffany by Marjorie Hart

This one just sounds like a delightful and fun read!

    Wonder by R.J. Palacio

Everyone who has told me about this book, tells me
to get my tissues ready. The reviews on it are great, and I
    don't mind a (well written) tearjerker now-and-then.

It's been awhile since I read some non fiction, and I have
heard great things about this one. I must admit I wasn't too fond of
(read: HATED IT!) my high school science classes, but put it in
book form with an interesting spin and lots of historical factoids, I'm game.

What are you reading this month?

CGM Podcast Episode 26: Quilt Show Happy

    Listen to the episode HERE

    Show Notes

    • Life Update: Maddy is walking, hide your stuff if you want to keep it. Sam is learning the steps needed for her June dance recital, but it's "all" about the costumes really.

    • WIPs: Slow progress these past few weeks. I have sewn the binding on At Home in the Woods quilt, and cast on my French Press Felted Slippers in Knit Picks Wool of the Andes worsted in the Cranberry colorway. I am also working on a few projects to go in a magazine this Fall - my fist published items!

    • What's Making Me Happy in Crafting: The Mid Atlantic Quilt Festival and the podcaster meetup that happened there Saturday, Feb. 25th. Simply the most wonderful time I have ever had at a quilt show. Listen to the interview Sandy at Quilting for the Rest of Us recorded while we were together.

    • How CGM Keeps It Together: Occasional "solid" blocks of "Me Time" i.e. my full day on my own at the quilt show.

    •  Book Review: Below Stairs by Margaret Powell..I also mentioned the BBC dramas Downton Abbey, and a new one only playing in the UK so far, Call the Midwife

    Below Stairs by Margaret Powell

Call the Midwife (BBC drama airing in UK)

    • Previous blog post with ideas for shows to watch or books to read while waiting for Season 3 of Downton Abbey. Shows   Books
