Thursday Thoughts

  • I think I broke my toe last weekend.
  • Walking around the house barefoot.
  • In a house with 2 little ones who stomp through life dropping everything in their path,
  • It was inevitable.
  • Sam was briefly concerned for my poor toe, but that concern quickly turned to excitement.
  • Finally, finally she had a real live "patient" on her hands and could practice her Doc McStuffins routine on me.
  • I think she was disgruntled that her live patient was so squeamish to have a 5 year old poke and prode her possibly broken toe, and kept yelling, "Quit it!" and "Ow! That hurts!" at her.
  • Her stuffed animal patients never make that much fuss.
  • Maddy showed absolutely zero sympathy for my plight.
  • She was still demanding snacks and filled Sippee cups with regularity.
  • And was just fine with making me hobble around her as I went to do her bidding.
  • Luckily for me, I don't think my toe was all-the-way broken.
  • It just hurt like a mother for 3 days, and turned somewhat black-and-blue.
  • But I'm able to walk on my foot with minimal discomfort now, although I still can't really wiggle the toe yet.
  • Is this what's called toe-jam?
  • Anyways since this was a foot injury, not hand, this didn't prevent me from finishing up my Wendy Knits mystery shawl.
  • Only it didn't exactly turn out to be a full shawl.
  • or even a shawlette.
  • The pattern called for 425 yds of sock yarn and a size 5 needle.
  • That's what I used.
  • I got gauge.
  • I still ran out of yarn!
  • So it's more like fat scarf size vs. shawlette or shawl size.
  • To be perfectly honest, I wasn't totally thrilled with the finished look of the project, even the ones I saw on Ravelry.
  • It just isn't a pattern to my taste or style.
  • The same thing happened with the Stephen West mystery shawl.
  • I "cheated" and looked at spoiler pics of the first 2 clues on Ravelry.
  • It looks very similar (so far) to another of his patterns, which is in my queue.
  • I think I'd just rather not be surprised, and knit the patterns I already know I like.
  • So that's 2 Mystery KALs a bust for me.
  • I've decided to cast on Stephen West's Daybreak Shawl for now.
  • It's not the one that looks like the mystery shawl, but it is another one I've been wanting to make for a long time.
  • And great news for me: the yarn I bought for the "busted" mystery, is perfect for a Daybreak shawl.
  • La!

  1. Sorry to hear the Mystery knits were a bust :( I haven't followed those but knew I didn't like the West shawl last year. I either love or hate his designs. Thought about daybreak, but did pogona and love it. Thinking about doing it again in 2 colors.

Loved hearing how Maddy tried to play dgoc but hope ner further damage was done. I think toejam is completely different.

  3. Sorry to hear about your toe!! Same thing, sorta, happened to me the day before my big move. I was told by several and a doc that it was going to take several weeks. That was May now it July. The swelling and black an blue took several weeks to go away. I now can move the last 3 toes on my right foot without pain.

As for your mysteries. Let it go and just do it.

  6. Oh no! I can't believe you ran out of yarn! It was small enough without being even smaller :) I know that mine will just sit nicely folded in a box, but I am really pleased that I managed a decent job of the lace knitting. I totally agree with you about checking out the spoilers, no point wasting all that time to have something you don't like. Plus I like to know that mine looks right!!
